The church dates from June 10, 1837, when Elder Alpheus French became the first Baptist preacher to give a sermon in Porter County.
When Bell and her husband, Marvin, became members in 1960, the church was still located at its original site on the northwest corner of Chicago and Lafayette streets in downtown Valparaiso.
In 1961, a new church was constructed at 2205 N. Campbell St. Bell said she worked with other members to prepare the building by painting walls and varnishing doors.
“It was just country out here,” Bell recalled of the site. “There was nothing there. For years people didn’t think this was a church because we had no steeple.”
